ANNE'S STORY
I lost my 20 month old son last year to a rare illness. In July 2007
Cameron became unwell. He had tests to discover what was wrong with him as
he appeared so fit and healthy they found it difficult to diagnose him. In
November 2007 after becoming unwell again diagnosis was made. We were told
that Cameron had a life threatening blood disorder Haemophagocytic
Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). He was admitted to Hospital and started
Chemotherapy the following day.
This was
to keep the disease under control until a Bone Marrow transplant could be
done.
He amazed us with his bravery throughout his treatment. Cameron received Bone Marrow donated by his brother Ciaran at the end of January 2008. At first things went well but days later complications set in with painful effects for our little man. His lungs were so badly damaged and he was admitted to intensive care. After four weeks on life support our beautiful son's machine was turned off and he passed away peacefully in Mummy's arms.
At the time we were unaware of any charities that could help us so we set up Camerons Smile fund. The aim of this was to help other families with children who had the same thing that took our sons life. It's a very rare blood disorder called HLH.
After setting up the fund we came across a charity called the Histiocytosis Research Trust. After contacting them they agreed to let us raise money using Camerons Smile as a fundraising arm. I am trying to do as many runs as I can to raise much needed awareness and completed 2 half marathons last year. I run with my sons Iggle Piggle teddy to represent him.
