Ever been out on a run and suddenly had to stop because of pain just below your ribs? If the answer is yes then you've probably experienced a stitch. Unfortunately a stitch is a common problem for long distance runners!
It is commonly caused by eating and drinking a bit too much, a bit too close to the start of the race. Thankfully it-s in your power to prevent a stitch from occurring. If you-re tempted to stuff your face & drink as much as possible the morning of the race, DON'T! Eating too much on the morning of the race will only make you feel heavy and sluggish. Use the few days before the race to ensure you're well fed and fully hydrated, then on the morning of the race just have a light breakfast.
You do need to take on water and energy during the run but don't rush it. Drinking a litre of water within the first mile will inevitably result in a stitch. Instead take small sips of drink, and little bites of food, at regular intervals.
If you do get a stitch during the race, try running bent forward for a while, breathing out forcefully as the foot on the same side as the stitch hits the ground. If this doesn't work you may have to take a short walking break and gently stretch the area. Don't worry, a stitch doesn't usually last for long, but it's still best not to get one in the first place!

If you want to show people that you're in training for
the
Worlds First Kilomathon then why not purchase your very own 'in training'
t-shirt. If you need something to get you out there training, this could
be the boost you need!
The Kilomathon in-training t-shirts are light weight with moisture management and are specially designed for comfort and especially good on long runs. I wore mine running the Dublin Marathon in October and it was very comfortable indeed. Those of you running on several consecutive days will also appreciate that the Kilomathon t-shirts are quick dry so will dry overnight easily, ready for the next day's training.
The t-shirts are available in small, medium, large & extra large and cost £11.95. To purchase an in-training t-shirt visit our online shop or click here.
Have you a story to tell about why you are running the Kilomathon? If so, please tell us about it and we could help you highlight your story in our eNewsletter. The newsletter currently goes out to over 5,000 members. Local newspapers are always willing to highlight stories and it could help you raise funds for your charity. If you do send a story please attach a photo to go along side the story. Click here or email us at adele@gsi-events.com with your story.
