TRAINING TIPS (RACE DAY CHECKLIST)

Race day is approaching rapidly so you need to have a checklist of things to think of and take with you on the day:

  1. Don't go too fast in the first few miles, it is far better to be slightly slower in the early stages than to be in front of your target plan.
  2. Make sure you, and your supporters, travel arrangements have been booked in advance, it saves last minute panics. If you or your supporters have not purchased bus tickets public train and bus information is available at www.Kilomathon.com/?public_transport
  3. Baggage buses close at 8:30am. Place your bag early. Kit - prepare your race day kit in advance, never wear new kit or shoes on the day, it may look good but if you get blisters it will hurt a lot in the latter stages.  Pack a large black garbage bag to wear in the timing pens it will keep you warm and dry.
  4. Eat well, plenty of carbohydrates in the last 3 days and drink lots of water, have a good carbo meal early on Saturday evening and just a light breakfast 2/3 hours before the start.
  5. Get a massage during the week before the race if you can.  Do not panic if you missed some training last minute – last week cramming does not work.
  6. Avoid alcohol in the last week, plenty of time to celebrate after the race.
  7. Rehearse your race mentally, be positive and confident.
  8. Get to the start nice and early. Use the toilets early and avoid an unpleasant delay. Be in your timing pin by 8:15
  9. Drink a little at each Water drink station.
  10. Warm up lightly; jog for 15 mins or so to get your muscles warmed up.
  11. Find your start place early, wear an old T-shirt that you can throw away once you get started, there is nothing worse than being freezing cold before you start.
  12. Make use of all aid stations on route, if your vest is chaffing get Vaseline from the First Aid helpers it will make life more comfortable.
  13. When you start to get tired focus on the reason for doing this and think of the money you will have raised - enjoy the crowd and soon you'll see that finishing line!
  14. After the race take a carbo snack or sandwich as soon as possible it will really start to aid recovery.
  15. Don’t forget to attach your number to your running top before race day.
  16. Try to collect your sponsorship monies as quickly as possible, show your medal to your sponsors and be proud of a wonderful achievement. Congratulations.

BEN'S STORY

To be honest I still can’t believe that I’m a long distance runner. However with my first (and so far only) half marathon in Birmingham completed in October in a respectable 1h 46m, there’s no denying that I’m physically capable of it, even if my mentality hasn’t and perhaps never will change. There’s quite a story behind how I agreed to run the London Marathon for the animals of the Blue Cross. The lady whom I met by sitting down next to a total stranger on a 3 hour train journey (during which I can’t remember a moment of silence) mentioned her own abilities in running and how she was becoming a vet at university. Months down the line and a few emails later, Laura told me how she wanted to do something noticeable. She said she’d understand if I declined, but had I ever considered running a marathon for charity?

The charity we decided upon is one that Laura has come into contact with as a vet student and has come to admire the work they do. Perhaps less well known than other pet charities, “The Blue Cross” has been helping animals and their owners since 1897. They work nation-wide to provide services to those people and animals who otherwise would not be able to get the treatment they so desperately need.

Since agreeing to run the marathon in August, I’ve lost count of how many times I have found myself hugging my legs sitting down in the shower basin, only able to think of how good it’s going to feel when I cross the Kilomathon line, and then six weeks later cross the finish line in London.

My message for you to take out into the world when you are done looking at your e-mails is that you should go for it: be it striking up a conversation with a stranger, or getting in at the deep end and completing what you once thought was physically impossible. I wish you all the best of luck. It would mean a lot to me, Laura, and the animals at the Blue Cross if you were able to sponsor us, even if it was only a few pounds.
