To be honest I still can’t believe that I’m a long distance runner. However
with my first (and so far only) half marathon in Birmingham completed in October
in a respectable 1h 46m, there’s no denying that I’m physically capable of it,
even if my mentality hasn’t and perhaps never will change. There’s quite a story
behind how I agreed to run the London Marathon for the animals of the Blue
Cross. The lady
whom I
met by sitting down next to a total stranger on a 3 hour train journey (during
which I can’t remember a moment of silence) mentioned her own abilities in
running and how she was becoming a vet at university. Months down the line and a
few emails later, Laura told me how she wanted to do something noticeable. She
said she’d understand if I declined, but had I ever considered running a
marathon for charity?
The charity we decided upon is one that Laura has come into contact with as a vet student and has come to admire the work they do. Perhaps less well known than other pet charities, “The Blue Cross” has been helping animals and their owners since 1897. They work nation-wide to provide services to those people and animals who otherwise would not be able to get the treatment they so desperately need.
Since agreeing to run the marathon in August, I’ve lost count of how many times I have found myself hugging my legs sitting down in the shower basin, only able to think of how good it’s going to feel when I cross the Kilomathon line, and then six weeks later cross the finish line in London.
My message for you to take out into the world when you are done looking at your e-mails is that you should go for it: be it striking up a conversation with a stranger, or getting in at the deep end and completing what you once thought was physically impossible. I wish you all the best of luck. It would mean a lot to me, Laura, and the animals at the Blue Cross if you were able to sponsor us, even if it was only a few pounds.
